The Key That Unlocks Your Marketing Emails<\/h1>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

All sent emails, at the very least, contain two parts, the body of the message and the message header.\u00a0 In fact, each part is analogous to an actual mail piece, the header being the fully addressed envelope (address of the recipient and sender) along with the subject line and other identifying data. \u00a0In other cases, the header is considered \u201cthe stamp\u201d of the envelope.\u00a0 The body, or letter, is the actual message with attachments.<\/p>

Depending on the email client used, the header information is usually displayed as:<\/p>

From: \u2013 Sender@mycompany.com<\/a>
To: \u2013 Reciever@hotmail.com<\/a>
Date: \u2013 The date when the message was sent.
Subject: \u2013 The subject line<\/p>

Simple stuff, right?\u00a0 Well yes and no.\u00a0 Headers can be mandatory, displaying specific information whereas other information can be optional.\u00a0\u00a0 Some headers contain the sending and the receiving time stamps of all actions taken on an email, such as forwarding the message to a friend to transferring the message from one computer to another.\u00a0 In fact, if the email had several destinations, there may be several RECEIVED headers. \u00a0Likewise, a physical mail piece, routed by the post office to different destinations, will receive a stamp at each post office: hence, the analogy of the header instead of the envelope becomes the stamp on an actual envelope.<\/p>

So you\u2019re sitting at your desk opening todays delivered mail.\u00a0 There\u2019s an envelope sitting on top of the pile, it\u2019s stamped, the stamp canceled by the local post office with yesterday\u2019s date, your name and address is typed on the front, but there\u2019s no return address.\u00a0 Do you toss it or open it?\u00a0\u00a0 Curiosity gets the best of most of us, so you open it. \u00a0It\u2019s junk mail, without so much as a glance, you toss it in the circular bin.\u00a0 Next, an envelope correctly addressed to you with a return address from the Local Farmers Market.\u00a0 You received these from this vendor before, discount coupons, coupons that you look for and want. \u00a0\u00a0You put that letter aside; it\u2019s useful, in fact, now that you have coupons today, you may go shopping after you open the rest of your mail, why wait.<\/p>

Just like the envelope\u2019s return address, sent from a name you know, prompted you to open the letter, the \u201cfrom\u201d line in your email,<\/p>

is the prompt or key for recipients to unlock your marketing emails and actually open and read them.<\/p>

Designing the right key is essential. There\u2019s a few rules to consider deciding who the email should actually be coming from. \u00a0There\u2019s several reasons to use different From Addresses, even went sent from the same company. \u00a0A company with many product and services may use a specific \u201cBrand\u201d in their \u201cfrom\u201d address: From Penny Lane Paper Towels, a person: From the Desk Peter your Gift Wrap Expert, or just \u201cFrom\u201d: Paper Mills Product.<\/p>

Regardless of the \u201cFrom\u201d address used the name needs to fit, so the senders identity is clear to the recipient. \u00a0\u00a0It also needs to be:<\/p>

  1. Obvious and transparent \u2013 never a trick or alias<\/li>
  2. Identifiable, not changing each time you send out a campaign<\/li>
  3. From your company or service, not sent from an @yahoo or @aol home address<\/li>
  4. Non-assuming, they may have signed up but don\u2019t remember you<\/li>
  5. More importantly if it\u2019s your first marketing email to them your \u201cfrom\u201d address should spark some familiarity; you had sent them a confirmation and hello letter. \u00a0Always use the \u201cfrom\u201d address combined with a persuasive subject line to target higher open rates.<\/li><\/ol>

    Finally yet essential, realize when your recipients receive email their email client may only display the \u201cFrom\u201d name, address (or both) from the header.\u00a0 Therefore the \u201cFrom\u201d address needs to:<\/p>

    1. Be consistent so that it is recognized and your message read<\/li>
    2. Become regarded as a trusted sender<\/li>
    3. Be significant so the recipient has a reason to open your email<\/li>
    4. Use a From Name and Address the recipient will recognize<\/li>
    5. Kept at a reasonable length, \u00a0so the entire name or From address is displayed<\/li><\/ol>
